1. What size cordyline am I purchasing?
Your cordyline prior to dispatch will be growing in a 50% shadehouse. As these are well established young plants with a healthy root system, the size of the plant can vary depending on the variety chosen.
The photograph displayed in the shop is of a mature cordyline, and some young varieties do not display these colours until reaching maturity, which can take up to twelve to eighteen months. This can depend further on variety and growing conditions.
2. How will my plants be sent?
In most instances except for bulk orders your plants will be barerooted (this involves removing all potting mix and wrapping the roots in a moistened material), labelled, packed into postage tubes and sent by Australia Post, and most instances orders will be sent on a Monday to allow five working days to arrive in the best condition possible. For orders exceeding 25 plants please contact us by email prior to ordering online.
3. What should I do with my cordyline when it arrives?
Place in a cool place, unwrap and repot in a well drained potting mix, add an organic fertiliser or a slow release fertiliser if this is your preference and water. Keep in a shaded well lit position, and if a full sun plant, introduce the plant to the sun over a week or so. If planting in the ground, dig a suitable hole, add fertiliser and mix thoroughly, then plant your cordyline. Do not press the soil down around the plant as this will stop water penetrating the soil.
4. Can I use my cordyline as an indoor plant?
As cordylines are an outdoor plant they will not prosper indoors. However they can be used as a feature plant on a patio and can be brought indoors for short periods.
5. Will they grow in full sun?
Some cordylines will tolerate sun better than others. Our descriptions will state what plants will tolerate sun and which plants require dappled light or semi shade.
6. How often should I fertilize my cordyline?
Use an organic fertilizer twice a year, or a slow release fertilizer as instructed on the packaging, and a regular watering of a weakened liquid fertilizer. Fertilizers which are high in nitrogen will encourage plant growth, this should be added early in spring. Fertilizers high in Potassium and Pot Ash will produce the bright rich colours, and this is added in early autumn.
7. What causes leaves to have tip burning, and show signs of browning.
This happens when the plant is under stress, eg. 1 in need of water, 2 lack of humidity in the air, 3 excessive strong winds and direct exposure to salt air.
8. What is a preferred potting mix and soil type?
An open friable mix is required to promote healthy root growth, and it also needs to hold moisture. Potted plants which are in the direct sun need extra attention as they will dry out a lot faster. All soil types need attention when planting your cordyline, prepare ground well, add an organic fertilizer and organic matter if available, water plant well and mulch.
9. Can plants be sent outside Australia or to Western Australia and Tasmania.
Sorry we cannot send to WA or Tas due to quarantine restrictions. We can send to some overseas countries depending on quarantine requirements. Overseas customers must make enquiries with their quarantine authority prior to placing orders.
